The Power of a Legendary Fashion Accessory

Even if you are the owner of one of those fashion items, chances are you don’t know the whole story behind Panama hats. Though they go back to the beginning of the 1600’s, Ecuador did not really start to export them until about 200 years later, when they slowly allowed those beloved hats to leave the country, with one condition. They had to have been bought in one of their ports. Shortly after that the hats could be found in other parts of South America as well, slowly but surely making their way toward the other continents.

Europe was still half a century away

It’s hard to fathom how late those hats found their way into Europe (at least when we are talking about a wider scale), but it was only in the 1850’s when the first of those fashion accessories surfaced at European fashion shows. Once they were seen on the grand scale, the demand vastly increased and they become one of the most sought after hand crafted items created in Ecuador. If you think the popularity of those hats has sailed off since, think again. Today, Panama hats for men are actually the most popular items exported from Ecuador.

Different types of Panama hats

- Montecristi: Even though this is probably the most recognized Panama hat in the world thanks to the movies, those Panama Hats for men are actually rather hard to come by. They are woven in the village of Montecristi. Of course it is important to note that there are excellent, high-quality hats following that style that were not created there.

- Roll-up: Unfortunately, many customers make the mistake of rolling up their Panama hat and stuffing it into their suitcase. Not all hats were created for that purpose, however. Some will lose their shape and never regain it, giving you an unflattering appearance. Only roll up your Panama hat if it was actually designed for it.
